It's been a few weeks since ollie morales got her out of the bar, and Isaac Merlo got her out of her own mind. Just yesterday, lam logan and her went into a tunnel cave to scout things out, and honestly? She's feeling like she hit her stride.[break][break]

It was a call made already. One that sounded a lot more depressed than Genevieve had been. She was in such a slump, she barely even processed what she stated, but it went something like this to the receptionist.[break][break]

This is Gen... Genevieve Cromwell. If you could set up an appointment with paxton concordas, I would... like to meet with him. Thanks. Bye.[break][break]

Though part of her wanted to turn tail and run, she wasn't about to, but for intents and purposes she was looking a lot better since then. Hell, Izzy and her had a fun time at the carnival. And she looked incredibly casual today. There was no training session, nothing planned. Just... speaking. So her dress is a little more starry, thanks to a chance meeting at a masquerade with luka chêne back in the winter. She had adored the look.[break][break]

She wasn't usually such a girly girl but... today was an exception. She finally got to relax. So now... here, in Ever Grande City, she waits in a waiting room, hands on her lap. Her eyes on her belt of three Pokemon brought, one empty.[break][break]

Guardian the Duskull had taken comfort quite literally being invisible behind her. No one would hurt his human. Period.

The morning had been particularly busy with meetings and paperwork to be archived or distributed. He'd settled into his chair to work quickly before lunch happened only to see a little reminder pop up. A one on one? He scrolled through, noting the rest of his day was canceled. [break][break]

He blinked, trying to remember the details before finally realizing he'd been the one to cancel his meetings. He'd had a feeling this would take long, and he didn't want to rush his visitor. So at 15 until they arrive, he closes up shop, sending the last of his emails and beginning to file away papers and throw away trash. Hopper is exceptionally helpful with this TELEPORTing away trash after the little wastebasket fills. [break][break]

Empty water bottles and chip bags, receipts and old sticky notes. Anything he'd cleared dealt with when into the garbage. Finally, he turned to the small mirror hanging on his wall, checking himself over for anything out of order. Paxton began retying his hair which had come loose in the flurry of activity. He tightened his tie, adjusted the suspenders. Made sure there were no stains on his shirt, retied his shoes. Once he feels presentable, and his office is deemed clean, he wipes off the visit chair and sends his partner out. [break][break]

The Porygon is quick to move, TELEPORTing outside to greet Genevieve with an electronic cry, and then opening the door with its psychic power, before floating right in. Paxton's already seated, having finished clearing his desk and taking a moment to finish up the half open water bottle he'd found. [break][break]

He twisted the cap back on before glancing over at the cadet and then smiling in recognition. "Genny- Genevieve right?" he said. "How've you been?"

The Porygon comes, snapping her out of her thoughts. A fading memory now, one she can't piece together fully. The bar hop. Why had she been so depressed? Why had she been drinking like she had been? She wasn't that type of person. She hadn't been.[break][break]

It was like things were fragmented, stitched together... maybe Officer Condordas could spare some advice? Or just time in general?[break][break]

Either way, when she enters the room, and sees Paxton smiling, Genny's smiling in return. So he did remember her. That makes all the difference! With a squeak and a nod, Genny chimes back. "Yup! Thanks for meeting with me!" Something so simple, and quick to confirm that. If offered, she finds a seat, pushing off the crinkles of her dress, before responding.[break][break]

"I'm... I could be better." she displays honesty, emotions on her sleeve, as she looks down towards her hands. She's still smiling, but it weakens considerably. "I've started pushing myself into all my Ranger work. Moved to Lilycove too." she rubs the back of her head, ruffling fingers through her now short hair. For some reason, she had cleaved off half of her hair, and she couldn't remember why anymore. It'd grown back, but now the reason she could hardly piece together.[break][break]

"Life has been... hectic." She puts a fist to her head and sticks out her tongue. But there was more than meets the eyes in Genevieve. Her face says it all.

Hopper waits for her to enter before chirping robotically and gently closing the door after her. They TELEPORT once more to Paxton's side, expectantly after helping their trainer assist. Paxton allows them seat on his desk as he pulls out a little treat for the robotic bird to nibble on. "Of course, my offer was sincere." Part of his job was having his door open for those that needed it. He didn't mind it. [break][break]

He blinks, glancing down at his partner as she seemed to dull, just slightly. But he nods anyway, as if reassuring her the door behind them is closed to avoid eavesdroppers. "Well, it's good to keep busy." he said, noncommittally. "Where did you live before Lillycove? I just moved out of the city to work here for my promotion." he said. Though he has a surprisingly small amount of things so the change in homes was not that bad. [break][break]

"I can see that." he points briefly to her bob cut. "Did a pokemon drag you by it so you cut it?" he asked. Far out there, but not improbably. In fact, it was the only reason why Paxton tried to trim his own hair semi regularly.

It's... nice to be busy. That much is true. It keeps the mind from caving in at the first sign of trouble. A distraction to lessen the blow. But Genny's mind wanders.[break][break]

"Slateport. A friend I helped with training told me about a beautiful part of Lilycove. And besides... too many bad memories." She had helped Shion with some light exercise. She loved that moment, though she wasn't completely herself then either. Ever since that mission with the dogs, something felt off. Wrong even. But now, it felt like a fading memory.[break][break]

Well.[break][break]

As she plays with her hands in her lap, her fingers press together as she thinks of what it was. The reason.[break][break]

She thinks of the arrowhead she kept from the mission, and understands... she did it for herself. "I prefer it shorter." Well, that wasn't completely true, but she felt longer hair might be more detrimental in th field after awhile. "Easier to work with."[break][break]

But that wasn't the only reason. Guilt. A rebirth after the hardship. That's what... it was. She was so sure. But why?[break][break]

"How... do you handle it? The job." How does he handle death? How does he process it? It was a lot already. Mr. Business broke her, but it was this mission that shattered her resolve. Utterly shaken. Her eyes held that weight and sadness to them.

"Mmm, well that's true. Lilycove is an idyllic city. The police department there is good, and it's well connected with the Ranger Corps." he said, off handedly explaining how he got sucked into the bigger machine of League bureaucracy. [break][break]

Paxton nodded long. "I concur. That's why I keep mine short. Usually." he said. Currently, strawberry blonde locks were fading into a more permanent pale yellow as the last of the pink dye grew out and he'd chopped off his ends. But it wasn't unmanageable yet, so he left it alone. [break][break]

He takes pause in her next question. It's worded strangely. And come to think of it, the perkiness he'd found annoying from before was gone. The enthusiasm is all but nonexistent. He lets her question hang in the air, letting the silence stretch before taking deep breath through his nose. The mood was off, and he was familiar with this kind of thing. He'd done it enough times in Kanto. [break][break]

"Genevieve, can you be more specific?" he asked, direct but tone gentle. "Is there something on your mind?"

All the agreement from the blonde were nice. It made sense why to keep it shorter. As she'd come to find out in the coming days on Route 105, longer hair can lead to some problems. But it's not that. Not right away.[break][break]

Genny's smile fades entirely. The question over specifics, gentle as it is, only makes her remember more. And the harrowing experience it all is.[break][break]

"There was a mission in Ultra Sea. My first time commanding a group of people... I was unprepared." Her eyes prick with tears, a hand moving to cover her face. But she shakes it off. "One of my Pokemon sacrificed themselves... for me." And that's not all. No, that sadness continues to snowball. "Then, the mission with the dogs. I feel like... I can kind of recall bits and pieces of it. I kept losing Pokemon."[break][break]

The worst yet.[break][break]

"Is this what it's always been like?" Her question sounds more pleading. Like she wants Paxton to tell her, that her's is just a freak accident. Like that will make it any better.

There's something more serious going on than a busy day or broken ORNAMENT. He listened intently, Hopper quieting their own beeping as she spoke. He lets the ranger let it out, venting her grief as she ran over the events in such quick succession. She looks up at him, and he starts to understand this is probably the first time she's come to face something like this. And while he wasn't incredibly knowledgeable in Ranger things, he was an expert in disaster having lived through so much of it in Kanto. Now here. [break][break]

"I'm not going to say 'it's never like this' because I don't want to give you a guarantee." he said, choosing his words carefully. "No matter the day, the mission, or the conditions you face, no results is guaranteed. You can only plan for it, and plan for that plan to fail." he said, gaze darkening as he tried to hold back the memories of himself and CALLISTA MOON , trying desperately to hold their group together for so, so long. It'd almost broken them both, permanently. A hand grazes up his neck onto skin that thanks to Palkia's fuckery, no longer exists. But he can feel the phantom pains all the same. He can still see Joules, broken and battered. [break][break]

"Even the best of us are one mishap away from biting it. That's why we train, so we can minimize the loss." he said. [break][break]

"Your pokemon made a conscious choice to protect you based on a...wonderful relationship you built with it." he continued. "That's not your fault." [break][break]

"The joint hallucination in Galar was unprecedented, but at the end of the day it wasn't real Genny. Everything after being sucked into those relics was at best a warning. There were casualties, yes. Things were blown up, mythical pokemon rampaged. But I wouldn't let a lucid dream take up your worries." Not when there was so much to deal with in the waking world. GOODBYE GALAR was a distant memory with its quirks but ultimately not real. And not something he would pursue aside from having added his own report when the time came about what he did and what he saw. As far as he was aware, their pokemon died from the ruin corruption and the battle between the dogs and the beasts. [break][break]

He gets up at this point, turning to a table in the corner and clicking on an electric kettle. Tea. He wanted some tea. Hopper jumps in, TELEPORTing to the ranger's side with some tissues for her to wipe with as Paxton busied his hands, no longer able to stay still as he tried to comfort, advise, and work through his own pushy memories. [break][break]

"It doesn't get any better." he said after a few minutes, when he turns to look at Genny, silently making her a cup. They were meowth themed. He'd gotten them for the Olly mug, a cute Galarian breed that he was using for himself now. "It hurts every time." he pours into his own mug, before pulling out a couple of tea bags and beginning to steep them. "But I didn't have a choice, Genny. I was drafted. I was happy to go, but I didn't make that choice. The League will not offer absolutes, only best possible results. We don't guarantee people's safety when they go into rifts or join on the front lines, because we can't." He mixes some sugar into his cup. [break][break]

"You chose to do this. You chose to take the risk. And I think...you need to think about if this is what you really want for yourself, and your loved ones. And it's ok if you don't." He finally moves back setting a mug in front of the redhead and he sits back down at his chair with his own. "I can only listen, and try to help you work through it." He never had good advice, only his own experience and a knack for listening. Sometimes that's all people needed.

Genevieve listens. Boy, does she listen. Like Paxton has some gospel, some silver bullet, some smoking gun that will end this pain. Like, it will be all better. But the more he talks, the more he lets loose, the further those words unload, the heavier it gets. The weight continues to build. Because she already knows everything he says is true.[break][break]

Every word.[break][break]

Her lips tremble. She can feel it trying to drag her down, draped over her skin like a scar for each death. Each weigh down harder, each push down further. But still... she remains quiet.[break][break]

It reinforces the part of her that went into this life. The eager girl who wanted to be a Ranger when she was young, now a Ranger and weighed down by the dream she had once held dear. But.[break][break]

But.[break][break]

Each Pokemon made the conscious choice to push her. Each sacrifice, pushes her forward. Every failure, calculated by love to ensure she keeps going. It's haunting. How much love she feels for them, returned as a ghostly whimper. Revolving around her into the grave dug for each. Each one another tear, with Paxton getting up, and Hopper teleporting some tissues. Something she takes, and pets Hopper, if given the chance.[break][break]

The Meowth-themed teacup does nothing to help her, save looking cute.[break][break]

Wiping her eyes... Paxton says it. This is the silver bullet. The straw that breaks the camel's back. It doesn't get better. And it hurts every time. And that has Genny's eyes fill with momentary despair. But.[break][break]

But.[break][break]

He's right. Was this what Genny wanted? Paxton was drafted. He was happy to go. But Genny...? Genny joined on a dream. Now, that dream was put into question.[break][break]

Why is everything so heavy?[break][break]

It's what Genny needed to hear. And as she closes her eyes, she inhales. She holds it for a few moments... and thinks of it all... every death... every fight... was it worth the pain?[break][break]

"I can't turn back now." She says it, and realizes what exactly those words meant. To turn her back on it after Mr. Business gave his life. Or all of those within that ephemeral dream, the warning it gave... it felt like she'd be betraying them. They died to make that push. They died because they loved her. She failed because she couldn't pull her weight.[break][break]

But the idea of another mission... that debilitated her. The fear grabbed at her.[break][break]

"I feel like such a hypocrite." Genny moves to get some tea, pouring it in, as she pulls it close. "... I want to be Head Ranger... but I'm afraid I'll lose more if I try..." And she would. Such is the nature of this dream. Aim as high as she can, but realize how far she can fall? An important lesson to be had.

He sips at his tea, the heat swirling off of it in little clouds. Hopper has moved back to his trainers side, munching on a tea cookie he holds out for them. He doesn't like these conversations. He's not aa professional. Grief counseling isn't his thing. He's told his therapist as much, but if not him then who? People could implode carrying this much bottled up. He knew better than anyone. [break][break]

"You can, or you can keep going." Paxton assured her. "Nobody, not even your pokemon, would blame you for it." he watches her drink, albeit slowly and nods to himself. Hopefully, she liked it sweet. "You might, or you might not." He sipped again, before blowing on the top of the cup. [break][break]

"I don't think it's bad to have a dream or goal to work towards, but you accept risk if you pursue this." he said, not wanting to unintentionally dissuade her from the corps. "You should be cautious. But if you're so cautious it leads to inaction, then you'll just paralyze yourself overthinking. And if- when, the worst should happen, it'll break you." Obsessing over a perfect outcome would hurt her. [break][break]

"I'm not saying don't grief either- it's ok to cry. But I think you now have an opportunity to really think about what you want to do, and what risks you're willing to take with your life."

It's sweet... Genny adores sweet. Sweet tooth, and the tea just hits the right spot. Her hazel eyes trail down to the tea itself.[break][break]

Her dreams aren't wrong, but the risk they come with, the road winds and turns. She can feel herself breathe heavier, trapped between both sides of the spectrum. On the one hand, stagnate. Never improve, and turn away. Paralyze the self, and be unable to move. Let it break her.[break][break]

Or remember the silver lining. The means to improve beyond what she is. The dream to make the world a better place, with everyone in it. The smiles of those she loves, those she has yet to meet. To bring a smile to someone's face, to brighten someone's day... the cost. Was it worth it?[break][break]

She's quiet.[break][break]

Turn and run, or stand and fight. Fight or flight. She can leave the corps. She could walk away. She can fight. She can stand when others cannot.[break][break]

"..." She's quiet. Another sip of tea, and she can think more clearly. Finally, she smiles. It's flimsy and weak, and it looks like anything can wipe it away like a cloth to a whiteboard. But there is hope in it. "I'm glad I have someone like you to look up to, Officer Concordas." He won't sugarcoat it. He's real with her. That's something she needs. Just like how ollie morales, lam logan, and Isaac Merlo are super supportive, Paxton is too. And that's something she values.[break][break]

No decision is made right now. Even in her smile, the tears begin to flow down her face, dotting her face, as she does so.[break][break]

Paxton may not have known it, but now he had become a role model to her. Enough so that she may attempt to arrest Rockets in the future, despite her status as a Ranger...

He let her process, keeping watch and occasionally feeding Hopper another treat every so often. He chirped softly, hovering near their trainer as they kept watch on the young ranger. She finally looks up at bit, and he mirrors her smile. "Don't mention it." he said shaking his head. "It's what I do." he added, a bit softer as he took another good sip of his warm tea. Less scalding and now a bit easier to swallow. [break][break]

He lets her cry, looks down at his mug in respect. "Wanna come work with me?" he offered. "For the week I mean. We can spar in the morning, you can grab the office lunch and then head home after." he said, voice low and lips pulling into an unfamiliar grin as he offered Genny an easy week. [break][break]

"I want-..." there's a pause. He clears his throat and reminds himself that Genny is barely his subordinate. She's a ranger looking for advice from a man that'd promoted out of the corps. "I highly recommend you take some time off and get your head straight." he said. [break][break]

"Don't obsess, ok? Remember quitting or carrying on won't reflect poorly on you either. You're not a failure if you leave, and there's loads of other things you could do for the League that isn't killing." he said wit ha small shrug. [break][break]

"Anyway, that's just my advice. I would've jumped at the chance of taking a week off in Kanto." he said with a huff. An attempt at a laugh. He sipped from his mug once more and Hopper floated out the tissue box again as they let Gennny vent.

The offer comes to her all of a sudden. Come work for a week with Paxton... spar in the morning, office lunch, and heading home. Her hazel eyes brighten. Brightening up immediately. Though her smile still seems flimsy, she could use it. It's like an internship. A little training to boot.[break][break]

"I'd like that." she starts off. Continuing to listen. It was okay to run away. This was a time of self-reflection. A time to think through all the hardships and put it into perspective. Is reaching the stars important, if to do it she has to lose her heart along the way? Is it worth it, to let herself get used to the killing, get used to the warfare, get used to the blood, and death? Does it make her stronger, to slowly prune away at a flower?[break][break]

No answer she thinks of she likes.[break][break]

"I know," she laments. She's not a failure if she turns her back on it. Accepting another tissue from Hopper, she would have pet them, given a chance. "Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a Ranger. My mom, my dad. Both of them were these great Rangers in Galar. I looked at them, and I never understood why... they always looked so sad." With downcast eyes, her reflection in the tea mirrored how they looked. The weights that kept on piling on.[break][break]

It was obvious in hindsight. "They never wanted this for me... that's why they must have given me Mr. Business," she reflects. Protection. the Darmanitian was one of the sweetest of the world.[break][break]

"..." getting up, with finishing what tea she had, she looks at Paxton, and gives him a soft, stronger smile. "Let me know when I can come in for a week. I have a lot of PTO thanks to the recent promotion. Thank you," she still looked sad. But this talk, this helping hand from Paxton did wonders.
